If autonomous vehicles make their way into our lives and we start being passengers and not drivers in our own cars there are a lot of new things that we’ll be able to do.
You might want to read, work, paint or play games as you travel and there’s a world of new possibilities you might explore with a self-driving car. However, there could be some new problems emerging if you do try out any of those things while you travel...
Joe’s research is all about what happens when you confuse your senses by travelling and doing something else at the same time – motion sickness. This could be an issue for a large section of our society who already suffer with motion sickness. This could get worse as vehicles take over the driving. Joe shares his research on training people to travel happily and keep their lunch where it is supposed to be.
There are now batteries everywhere – in everyone’s pocket, home, car and remote control – but what happens when they go flat? We can’t keep putting the dead batteries in a drawer and forgetting about them forever.
Puja shares her experience on the Graduate Trainee Engineering programme and how her research is looking into the afterlife of batteries – can they be recycled? Can we recover the valuable materials that make batteries? She touches on how technology should be designed with recycling and end-of-life built in as part of the process – the idea of a circular economy - and shares some knowledge on how WMG is hoping to give dead batteries a future.
We’ve all heard a lot of talk around electric vehicles recently – they could play an enormous role in cleaning up our air compared with petrol and diesel vehicles – and the forecast is that there will be more and more of them on the road. So how are we going to produce enough batteries and who is going to sit there placing the thousands of cells per car in the right order?
Rohin tells us about the successes of his research and the AMPLIFII project, featuring batteries for vehicles designed to drive for endurance or for speed, with incredible electric sports cars. He shows us how robots can be used to assemble and weld the cells into batteries and how the future of battery manufacturing could make all the difference in terms of seeing electric vehicles being rolled out.
