The project focused on creating a structured, research-ready digital database that systematically documents all Shakespearean intertextual references found in James Joyce’s Ulysses and their renderings in the three existing Hungarian translations of the novel. The database was built through several coordinated stages. First, all Shakespeare-related references were identified, extracted, and compiled into a unified corpus based on a full manual reading of the novel. Each reference was then verified, contextualised, and assigned a precise location in both the source text and each Hungarian target text, allowing direct comparison across translations.
Following data extraction, all entries were annotated according to a set of methodological criteria developed during the project. These include the type of intertextual reference (explicit quotation, allusion, paraphrase), the translation strategy employed, the degree of creative adaptation, and whether the translator relied on pre-existing Hungarian Shakespeare translations. The data were then organised into a structured digital format to ensure consistency, transparency, and reusability for future research.
The resulting database represents the first systematic, comparative resource dedicated to Shakespearean intertextuality in the Hungarian reception of Ulysses. It provides a searchable, academically citable dataset that supports translation studies, intertextuality research, digital humanities approaches, and comparative literary analysis. - Subject
